Why are independent "mom and pop" pet stores rarely in shopping centers with grocery stores?
I thinking of opening a pet store with a premium quality Dog And Cat food supplies and environmental (Leashes, collars, toys, etc.) In my research I found that very few are located in shopping centers with grocery stores. The Most are not anchored centers or in their own buildings. Why Why? The cost? A parking space?
Mom and pop stores tend to focus on initial costs, while the franchise requires you to spend money to ensure success. Because shopping centers are dominated by franchises and independent businesses find themselves in places that are not so popular, both in the upper floors of department stores, malls or outside of places like that. I suggest you try to understand where your customers. If customers are local, then you can be any where. But if your customers are widely distributed, then being in a mall means that it is easier for people in.
