My dog has separation anxiety with barking!!Please Help?
My lab mix is 3 years old, and hates being left alone. I get up each morning and give him 1 hour mix of running/walking until hes about to fall over, that way I know he is tired when I leave. I give me the big Kong treat dispenser that he can knock and push around so he can keep himself occupied. Most of the time he is good. The problem is the lady above my apartment called animal control and complained about his barking. They recommended we use some of the following to fix the problem: shock collar, citronella collar, pheronmone collar, Thundershirt, and even a Dog Whistle sensor thing. My dog is epileptic, so some of these may not be a good idea. Anybody have any suggestions for what I should do?
i would take him to one of those for sure, but cannot afford it. can barely afford my rent. just not sure what to do
No, do not use any of these shock and cruelty things. They are horrid. You need to work with your dog on the separation issue. Stop with the appeasing things. On a dog you do not have to leave, act as if you are leaving and go out. Wait a few seconds outside the door and come back in. Look at a magazine for a minute or walk about the room. Then do it again trying to increase the time you are out each time. Providing toys and such is good so the dog won’t be bored, but this technique should help him to understand that you will be back, that you have not abandoned him. Other things to consider are getting someone to come by and take him out or maybe a day or two a week at doggy day care. Good luck.
